The Ohio Bureau of Workers' Compensation (BWC) is changing to a new billing system in 2015 to allow BWC to change from retrospective or arrears billing to prospective billing.
The changes will occur in stages over the next year. While you should have received a letter from BWC about this recently, here are the basics you need to know.
The enrollment deadline for the 2015 workers' comp group rating program is Nov. 24, 2014 instead of Feb. 28, 2015.
The group retrospective rating program enrollment deadline is Jan. 31, 2015.
Both deadlines fall three months earlier than the traditional timeline.
Your final payment for the July 1 - Dec. 31, 2014 period is due Feb. 28, 2015.
For the period of Jan. 1 - June 30, 2015, employers will be required to report and file payroll, however, BWC will issue a credit for the premium for this period.
The first payment for the July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016 program year is due July 1, 2015. BWC will also issue a two-month credit, and premium payments may be made in installments.
Following the end of the policy year (June 30, 2016), employers will be required to report actual payroll to BWC and "true-up" the premiums for the July 1, 2015 - June 30, 2016 period.
How to stay informed
If you get your workers' comp group rating coverage through your independent agent, talk to your agent about the changes. If you don't get your workers' comp group rating coverage through your independent agent, you can access information about the changes directly from BWC at www.bwc.ohio.gov.
